Your Foundations (Scalic, Rhythmic and Harmonic Awareness) should be solid. If your Foundations are solid, you can build on them with confidence. For example, when you add Guide Tones, Arpeggios, Modes, Chromatics, etc, to these basic Foundations, you see them as part of a bigger picture and not as isolated events. Understanding this is what makes the difference between someone who controls the information, i.e. someone who can express themselves freely, or someone who is controlled by it.
