I'm Noel Hefele — eco-artist, landscape painter, and Bronx resident. My work centers on landscapes that most people walk past without seeing: the Tibbetts Brook daylighting project in the northwest Bronx, the forgotten Putnam Railway trail, the wetlands and meadows of Van Cortlandt Park. I paint these places because I believe landscapes have to be witnessed before they can be cared for. The paintings are documentary acts. The channel is where I bring you along. Here you'll find field sessions, studio work in oil and watercolor, the slow thinking that happens between paintings, and the ecological stories embedded in the ground beneath our feet. The Bronx is one of the most ecologically complex and underrepresented landscapes in North America. I'm making that visible. At least that's the hope. This is also a person-first channel — my full self shows up here, not just the finished work.
